Transforming Lives Through Community Support and Nutrition

The Struggle Begins

Audricka Johnson once faced an uphill battle balancing her fixed income with the demands of daily life. After encountering significant health issues, she realized the necessity of adopting a healthier lifestyle. The challenges began when Audricka suffered a mild stroke, followed by a diagnosis of muscular dystrophy. These events not only altered her ability to work but also highlighted the importance of nutritious food in maintaining her health. The realization that processed foods were exacerbating her condition led Audricka to seek alternatives. However, affording healthier options became a significant hurdle. With limited resources, she found herself questioning how she could provide both for herself and her daughter, Audriyanna Nelson, while ensuring they remained healthy.

A Lifeline Appears

During a church service, Audricka learned about FBH Community’s monthly food distributions, a program aimed at supporting residents within Volusia County. This discovery proved to be a turning point. The food pantry offered a variety of fresh produce, vegetables, eggs, rice, beans, chicken, and other essential items—all provided free of charge. For Audricka and Audriyanna, this was more than just food; it was a lifeline that enabled them to eat nutritiously without depleting their limited resources.Visiting the pantry regularly has become a routine that has significantly impacted their lives. Audricka now feels empowered to allocate more of her disability income toward rent, thereby enhancing their housing stability. The assistance from the food pantry has been instrumental in helping her maintain her health, which she acknowledges as crucial for her well-being. “Without the help from VCan, I wouldn’t be able to stay healthy,” Audricka reflects. “Their support is literally saving my life.”

Support Beyond Food

Beyond the immediate provision of food, the support Audricka received extended into emotional and spiritual realms. Her church, GNZ, played a pivotal role in connecting her with the resources she needed. The compassion and care from the FBH Community team have uplifted her spirit, providing much-needed encouragement during challenging times.Audricka’s gratitude knows no bounds. She expresses deep appreciation for the nourishment and care that have sustained her family. “Without their help, I don’t know where we’d be today,” she says. “Thank you for nurturing my body and uplifting my spirit.” The comprehensive support system has not only addressed her immediate needs but also fostered a sense of belonging and hope for a brighter future.

Looking Ahead

Audricka’s journey underscores the profound impact of community initiatives in transforming lives. As she looks ahead, she remains optimistic about the possibilities that lie before her and Audriyanna. Despite the obstacles they have faced, the support from FBH Community has laid a foundation for healthier living and greater stability. For Audriyanna, who is six years old and full of energy, the holidays hold special significance. Her wish list includes clothes in sizes 10-12 and a black jacket or coat. The joy of spending Christmas together, opening gifts, and celebrating the season brings warmth and happiness to their home. FBH Community’s mission extends beyond mere food distribution. It aims to eradicate the causes of generational poverty through proactive community engagement. Programs like KidsZone, TeenZone, FBHonors, Change the Code, and Lemerand Center of Excellence at Daytona State College are designed to create lasting change.
